Hang Dau water tower

Hang Dau water tower

Hang Dau Water Tower - An architectural and historical mark in the heart of Hanoi Hang Dau water tower is located at the intersection of Hang Dau, Hang Than, Quan Thanh, Phan Dinh Phung, Hang Cot and Hang Giay streets, in Ba Dinh ward, Hanoi city. Built in 1894 during the French colonial period, the project is one of the oldest water towers in Vietnam, associated with the process of forming Hanoi's modern water supply system at the end of the 19th century. The tower is built of rubble in a circular cylindrical architecture, about 19 m in diameter, consisting of 3 floors with a conical roof and a lightning rod at the top. Inside is a system of interconnected arches and circular walkways, creating a unique architectural space. For decades, Hang Dau Water Tower and Don Thuy Water Tower have played the role of providing clean water to the inner city area of Hanoi. After no longer performing its water supply function, the project was preserved as a typical architectural and historical relic of the Capital. In recent years, the tower has been renovated and opened for sightseeing, combining art display spaces and exhibitions about history and the environment. The interior space still retains the ancient structure, and is supplemented with installation works carrying messages about water resource protection and sustainable urban development.
