OBON Ceremony 2025. Obon - Traditional event handed down from the old Japanese Obon is an event to worship ancestors in Japan, held around July August every year. During this time, there are many large -scale festivals across the country. Obon is a traditional event handed down 600 years ago. The origin of the event started from the section of the Sutta to ask the Buddha to save her mother from hell. It is indicated that it is necessary to worship many people, and in fact he has saved his mother. The content of the segment has been handed down to Japan, to this day the Japanese still have a custom of visiting the grave, praying for the ancestors to come to the afterlife to be peaceful and happy. Besides, the time for Obon celebration is also prescribed. There are two types of Kyubon (old Obon ceremony) held in mid -August, and Shinbon (new Obon ceremony) was held in mid -July. Most local areas held an old Obon ceremony, only Tokyo and certain regions were to organize new Obon ceremony.  Across Japan, the Obon holiday lasts 4 days from 13 to 16 every year every year. In 2025, the Obon vacation schedule will be from Wednesday to August 13 to Saturday, August 16. Every Obon's holiday, there are many jubilant festivals held in the Japanese provinces. Festival in Tohoku In Sendai city, Miyagi province in Tohoku in northern Japan, the Sendai Tanabata Festival (Seven Ceremony) will be held on August 6 to August 8 every year. Here, we can admire the unique colorful décor made from Washi paper, and giant bamboo trees taller than 10m taken from the deep mountains. The paintings drawn with black ink look impressive by the attractive vision, strong but equally delicate.  Festival in Kanto and Koshinetsu region In Kanto and Koshinetsu, the old Obon festival Fukagawa Hachiman will be held from August 11 to August 15 every year. This is one of 3 major Edo festivals because of its spacious scale. Especially at the official festival held every 3 years, about 120 different large and small palanquin will be paraded around the street. Besides, the Sawara-Taisai Summer Festival is also a highlight not to be missed. Eye -catching palanquin carrying stereoscopic dolls is the characteristic of this festival.  Festival in Kansai and Tokai region  In Kansai and Tokai, the Gion festival will be held in the Yasaka temple area, Kyoto province. The Gion Festival is held for about 1 month, from July 1 to July 31 every year and has a history of more than 1100 years. The feature here is that people who disdain the palanquin made from ropes, absolutely do not use a column nail that has been recorded in UNESCO's invisible cultural heritage. In addition, not only the Gion festival, the Kyoto province also has the ritual of burning the Mount Gozan no Okuribi extremely unique. Giant Chinese characters written in mountain flames will make an unforgettable impression for the viewer.   Festival in Shikoku and Chugoku region In the Shikoku and Chugoku, the Awa Odori dance in Tokushima city, Tokushima Prefecture is a famous event nationwide. The festival is held from August 12 to August 15 every year. The Awa Odori dance is the event of the dancers in the classic Yukata costume, the legs of Geta clogs performing traditional dance performances at the theater in the city areas. Besides, the Yosakoi festival of Kochi province is also a repertoire not to be missed. Yosakoi is a dance that both holds Naruko musical instruments and flaps and dances. The scene of more than 100 dancers dancing constantly attracts tourists to stop.  Festival in Kyushu and Okinawa In Kyushu and Okinawa, the most famous is the Yamaga lantern festival in Yamaga city, Kumamoto province. The festival is held on August 15 - August 16 every year. Here, we can enjoy the performance of female dancers in traditional Yukata costumes, the head of the lanterns is a lighting item from ancient times of Japan. Shimmering light emitted from lanterns creates a fanciful space. You definitely have to come here to see it! In addition, in Okinawa province, there is an EISA festival held in late August. Especially, the Eisa Festival of the whole island has many unions attending will perform traditional dances of the province.
