Gia La Festival (or La Ca Village Festival) in Duong Noi, Ha Dong, Hanoi is a special folk festival, taking place in January (around the 6th - 14th of the first lunar month), highlighting the performance of "fighting the tiger" recreating the legend of General Duong Canh Cong eliminating wild animals to save the people. It is usually held on a large scale every 5 years, with a tense performance of "fighting the tiger" and the unique custom of "turning off the lights on the night of the festival", expressing gratitude to the Thanh. royal.  Origin and Meaning Remembering the Hero: Honoring General Duong Canh Cong during the Hung King period, who was instrumental in eliminating ferocious tigers and protecting the villagers of Ỷ La and La Noi. "Tiger Fighting" performance: Re-enacting the scene of hunting and destroying ferocious tigers with an elaborate folk performance, with chants, responses, lion dances, and a dramatic fake tiger beating. Custom of "Turning off the lights at Gia La night": At the end of the festival, the candles in the communal house go out, leaving only a dim light, creating a mysterious atmosphere when the tiger beating performance takes place, with the meaning of remembering merit.  Time and Location Time: Every year in the first month of the lunar calendar (usually from the 6th to the 14th), but the major festival is every 5 years. Location: La Ca Village (now in Duong Noi Ward, Ha Dong District, Hanoi).  Typical activities Ceremony: Singing for the Saints, Lo dances, Truong dances, palanquin procession. Festival Part (Farewell Night): Turn off the lights: The light in the pavilion turns off, only the light from the yard shines in. Response: Chanting and responding between men and women, imitating the sounds of animals. Fighting the tiger: A young man impersonating a tiger rushes out and fights with a group of hunters holding torches (symbolically), ending with the tiger being destroyed.  Gia La Festival is a unique cultural feature, showing respect to the Tutelary God and preserving the historical traditions of Hanoi people.
