Hukou Village Festival

Buoi Street, Tay Ho

Hukou Village Ho Khau village now belongs to Buoi ward, Tay Ho district, during the Le dynasty it was a ward of Thang Long Citadel; During the Nguyen Dynasty, it belonged to Trung canton, Vinh Thuan district. This is an ancient village on the lakeside, with a connection to West Lake, hence its name. In the past, two-thirds of the land in the village were low hills, the rest were fields along the lake. Legend has it that during the time of Hung King, there were people who made a living and established themselves in Ho Khau hamlet, making a living by fishing and growing lotus along the lake. The population became more and more crowded every day. In 1926, the village had 1,294 inhabitants. Ho Khau villagers have been making paper for a long time. The tradition of transmitting this profession dates back to the middle of the Ly Dynasty (early 12th century), when Mr. Thai Luan brought the profession to four villages in the Buoi area: Yen Thai, Dong Tho, Dong Xa and Ho Khau. The reason why paper craft was introduced here early is because the village is located along West Lake, along the Red River and To River, which is convenient for gathering raw materials such as wood trees from the mountains and midlands; It is also convenient for soaking materials to process into paper. The products of the paper industry here were initially paper and moi paper. By the early 17th century, the villagers improved the technique of making sharp paper so that the king could use it to write ordains for gods, to confer titles on mandarins, and to write decrees and orders. The ancient Ho Khau village was famous for having many people who studied successfully and became mandarins, of which the Ly family was known as a long-standing family. There were three people who passed the Huong Tribute at the beginning of the Nguyen Dynasty, two brothers Ly Van Phuc and Ly Van Hao, who both passed the Ky Mao exam in Gia Long's reign (1819). Their younger brother, Ly Van Loat, graduated from the Tan Ty Faculty during the Minh Mang Dynasty (1821). Among the three brothers, Ly Van Phuc is the most famous. He worked as an official in the Left Council of the House of Representatives and was sent as an ambassador to China. But when we talk about him, we talk about a cultural writer with speeches about filial piety. His name was given to a street in the Hanoi Stadium area. Ho Khau village has a communal house built in the year of the Goat, the year of Hoang Dinh (1619). The communal house worships Cong Le and Ca Le, who are said to be two brothers who lived during the reign of Hung King and had merit in fighting the enemy and defending the country; During the Ly dynasty, King Ly Thai To defeated the enemy. There is a theory that the communal house also worships Thai Luan - the founder of the paper industry. Next to the old communal house, there is a Van Chi to worship Confucius and successful people of the village. Ho Khau is also famous as a village with many religious buildings. The village has three temples, Thang Long temple (Chinh Duc Tu) worshiping Princess Huynh Nuong, the daughter of King Thuy Te. This is a manifestation of Vietnamese goddess worship and Mother Goddess worship. Not far from the temple is the Ve Quoc Temple worshiping Ca Le, who is said to be the husband of Ms. Huynh Nuong. To this day, it is also called Giap Dong temple because the temple is overseen by Giap Dong temple. About 300 meters inside the village is Duc Thanh temple, also known as Bac border temple because the temple is overseen by the village's North concubine, worshiping Cong Le - a sibling of Ca Le. The village also has many pagodas, of which Thanh Lau pagoda (Nom name is Sai pagoda) is more famous. The pagoda overlooking West Lake looks very poetic. The pagoda was built at the beginning of the Le - Trinh dynasty. In the pagoda there is a large bell cast in the seventh year of Canh Thinh (1799). In a year, Hukou village has two festivals: February festival. The unique feature of this festival is that on the evening of the 13th (main festival), there is a rowing boat at Ve Quoc Temple. The rowing team consisted of 32 newlyweds, who had to fast from the first day of the 13th day until the evening of the 13th, divided into 2 rowing teams at the temple yard. The April festival on the full moon day includes a procession of monks and water to pray for peace. From an ancient village, Ho Khau has now become a city. In the future, Ho Khau will become a cultural tourist village along West Lake full of traces of Thang Long's thousand years of civilization.
