Phu My - Kieu Mai Village Festival

Phu My - Kieu Mai Village Festival

My Dinh 2, Tu Liem

Phu My - Kieu Mai Village Festival Phu My (My Dinh 2 ward, Nam Tu Liem district) and Kieu Mai (Phuc Dien ward, Bac Tu Liem district) are two adjacent villages of Hanoi city, taking Nhue river as the demarcation point and practicing intercropping agriculture. The marriage agreement between the two villages of Phu My - Kieu Mai was signed by the dignitaries of the two villages on April 10, the 6th year of Canh Hung (1745). It was later broken and was copied on June 1, the year of Quy Dau (1933), the reign of Bao Dai. The Phu My - Kieu Mai marriage ceremony originates from the custom of marriage between two villages to be friendly and help each other in production and life. The friendly relationship has been going on for many years, and in the year of Hoa Coc Phong Dang, the ancestors and dignitaries and the two peoples agreed to meet to discuss filial relations and welcome the Holy Cross of the two villages on the occasion of the festival. According to ancient customs, every year of Hoa Co Phong Dang, the two villages agree to organize a festival and have a grand procession: on the 7th day of the first month (lunar calendar), according to the custom of worshiping Gods, Kieu Mai villagers go to Phu Le communal house to worship Gods (worshiping Ly Nam De, Ly Phat Tu and A La Nang De); On February 10, Phu My villagers went to Kieu Mai communal house to worship the god (worshiping the general of the 18th Hung King period). After 1945 and before 2020, the Phu My - Kieu Mai marriage ceremony was held twice every 5 years, the rest were regular events. From 2020, the Phu My - Kieu Mai wedding ceremony will be held on a large scale once every 5 years, in other years only small-scale festivals will be held. The festival of Phu My village is held for 3 days (from the 5th to the 7th of January); Kieu Mai village festival is held for 4 days (from January 9 to 12). During those days, each village has one day to organize a filial procession and a council ceremony for the other village and the next day to organize friendly sports activities. The Phu My - Kieu Mai marriage ceremony is still maintained and practiced according to tradition and value. The custom of marrying, also known as filial piety, is a good custom in the relationship between villages in traditional Vietnamese society, contributing to strengthening the great solidarity of the community, nation, and people. The custom of making love between the two villages of Phu My - Kieu Mai is a vivid expression of this unique relationship. The Phu My - Kieu Mai marriage ceremony exists today as a "fossil" of the traditional inter-village form in the heart of the city, taking on the function of linking streets and wards. Participating in the festival is an opportunity for villagers to remember their homeland, tighten solidarity, enrich the spiritual life of the two communities, contribute to preserving good customs and traditions, and educating traditions for the next generations. With the above typical value, the Phu My - Kieu Mai wedding ceremony was included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism according to Decision No. 1728/QD-BVHTTDL dated May 27, 2021./.
