Tho Khoi Village Festival

Tho Khoi Village Festival

Cu Khoi, Gia Lam, Hanoi

Water procession ceremony at Tho Khoi village festival Tho Kho village festival in Cu Khoi commune, Gia Lam district, Hanoi is held on 8-10 of the second lunar month every year. Tho Khoi Village Festival takes place with many activities with typical cultural features of the Northern Delta tradition, but the most impressive is the water procession ceremony from the Red River. As the opening ceremony of the festival, the water procession is also the most important part. The water procession went to get clean, pure water from the Red River to bathe the Thanh Hoang statue. This not only shows respect and gratitude to the gods worshiped by the villagers, but also the wish of riverside residents for a year of favorable weather and good harvests. The people of Tho Khoi village hold a water procession ceremony on the morning of the opening day of the festival. At the head of the procession are the flags, drums, gongs, precious bowls, bowls, village Thanh Hoang palanquin, water palanquin, sacrificial team and finally the villagers. The procession started from Tho Khoi communal house along the dike road towards the Red River. The distance is nearly 2 kilometers but it takes nearly 3 hours to get there. The two palanquins of Thanh Ong and the palanquin of Thanh Ba were carried by the youth of Tho Khoi village. These two palanquins sometimes move normally in a group for a while, other times they are carried in reverse or rotate many times, creating a very different excitement. When arriving at the banks of the Red River, the Holy palanquins were left behind, and everyone got off the boat carrying only palanquins containing water. The boat reaches the middle of the clear water, the celebrant will perform the ceremony and scoop up 37 buckets of water to pour into the doe and then shout the boat back to shore. Arriving at the wharf, the group of people waved drums and flags, creating a bustling festive space on the way back. This time the water procession moved faster to be on time for the ceremony. The water in the doe will then be brought into the communal house for a "secret ceremony". Only two people, the monk and the celebrant, can perform this ceremony. Meanwhile, the healthy boys and girls of Tho Khoi village in traditional costumes still carry two Holy palanquins, moving around the village streets and often do not return to the communal house until late afternoon./.
