Van Vy fishing village festival

Dan Phuong, Hanoi

Van Vy fishing village festival Time: January 12-13 of the lunar calendar The poor people of Van Vy fishing village still preserve many unique festivals such as the net landing ceremony (February 20-22 of the lunar calendar), the common fish party (February 25 of the lunar calendar), where fishermen must leave the biggest fish to worship the Ha Ba spirit god. Especially the water procession festival on the river (night of January 9, 10). In recent years, it has been held at the hour of the Rat from January 12 to the next day. The water procession is an emotional light party at night. Van Vy fishing village is located in Hong Ha commune, Dan Phuong district, Hanoi. Since ancient times, the beginning of the Red River rapids has been the living place of fishermen from all over. Passed down from father to son, up to now the lives of Van Vy people are still closely tied to fishing. Many households dream of having a piece of land to build a house on the shore so that their children don't have to drift, so they can live and have a place to live - when they die, they have a place to bury. Previously, the Van Vy fishing village festival had strict regulations to build a communal house on the river, complete with large and small boats divided into compartments... moving up the river all the way to Yen Bai. There are some sections where there are not enough boats so ropes must be prepared for the group to pull along the riverbank. Every year, villagers collect precious water and clean sand to filter and choose to replace at the communal house. At exactly 0:00, the procession of palanquins and communal houses went to the dragon boat including 1 large boat and 50 small boats; Starting from Van Vy village communal house, going up to Dinh Nguyen temple to hold a ceremony to collect water from the river. When receiving water, the boat group swirls around the dragon boat, turns 3 times before swimming back to the pavilion. The elders take on the role of celebrant and worshiper. Young men in the village are chosen to carry the palanquin and guide the project from the communal house to the dragon boat and vice versa. The first boat owner is a dragon boat, followed by 50 boats. All are brightly decorated with sparkling flags and torches. The air, light, colors, and bustling cheers create the image of the sacred Dragon riding the water and reaching out to the ocean, showing the heroic spirit of the Yet Kieu army in the past. The procession takes about 2 hours to reach Thanh Diep - Me Linh. The boats turned off their engines and the group began the ceremony. Sand is brought from the tray and incense burner, the celebrant scoops sacred water from the middle of the stream and puts it into the sacred vase. The ceremony begins with a wish for peace in the country and people, good weather and favorable conditions for the people of Van Vy to do business with less hardship. The people of Van Vy are simple and do not wish for wealth or promotion. The sacred dragon Van Vy returned to the pavilion with elated emotions. On the morning of January 13, Van Vy village held the Yen Vi and Nam Quan ceremonies, and at 9 a.m., the incense offering ceremony was held. Besides the traditional rituals, the most unique part of the festival is the wrestling festival.
