The festival begins on January 22 every year with a palanquin procession from Ky Cung temple (Vinh Trai ward) to Ta Phu temple (Hoang Van Thu ward), ending on January 27, after the firecracker robbery festival and many other folk games and a palanquin procession from Ta Phu temple to Ky Cung temple.

The Ky Lua Cannon Festival has been held since the 17th century, associated with a historical legend showing the chivalry of a general of the Later Le Dynasty, Than Cong Tai, towards a Tran Dynasty mandarin, Tuan Tranh. Because they were impressed by Mr. Than Cong Tai's chivalry for writing a letter to the King to exonerate Mr. Tuan Tranh, every year the local people held a festival to welcome Mr. Tuan Tranh (from Ky Cung temple) to pay his respects to Mr. Than Cong Tai (Ta Phu temple).

The Ky Lua Firecracker Festival takes place with a rich scale, form and content.
