Dao Xa elephant procession festival

Thanh Thuy, Phu Tho

Special elephant procession festival at Dao Xa Communal House - Phu Tho The traditional elephant procession festival at Dao Xa communal house, Dao Xa commune, Thanh Thuy district, Phu Tho province, is a unique cultural event, imbued with the national identity and martial spirit of the Vietnamese people. Dao Xa communal house, built during the reign of King Le Gia Tong (1674 - 1675), worships Hung Hai Cong, the 19th brother of King Hung. The communal house worships Hung Hai Cong, the 19th brother of King Hung, who was sent to govern the Tam Giang region, the confluence of three rivers: Da River, Thao River and Bua River. Legend has it that Cong Hung Hai and his wife, Princess Trang Hoa, made great contributions in teaching people how to manage water, grow crops, raise livestock and build prosperous villages. King Hung, in recognition of his merits, gave two elephants. Before returning to guard the Song Nhi region (now in Hai Duong province), Hung Hai Cong handed over the responsibility of governing the Tam Giang region to his three children and led a pair of elephants to Dao Xa to give thanks three times and then say goodbye. Grateful for his merits, the villagers built a temple to worship him and honored him as Thanh Hoang. Every year, the elephant procession festival is held to commemorate and pay tribute to his merits. Held every year from the 27th to the 29th of the first lunar month, the festival aims to commemorate and pay tribute to the merits of Hung Hai Cong, a saint who made great contributions to building and defending the country. The elephant procession festival at Dao Xa communal house is divided into two main parts: the ceremony and the festival. The ceremony took place solemnly with traditional rituals preserved and kept for many generations. The rituals include the procession of elephants, incense burners, dragon treasures, tablets, coffins and offerings to the Thanh Hoang. In particular, the elephant procession is an important highlight, showing the people's respect and gratitude for Hung Hai Cong. The "elephants" are made of bamboo and papier-mâché, elaborately decorated and carried around the communal house to the bustling sound of drums and gongs, creating a sacred and heroic atmosphere. After the solemn ceremony, the festival took place with many unique cultural and sports activities, attracting the enthusiastic participation of people and tourists. Folk games such as tug of war, robbing chickens, fetching water, pounding rice, pulling fire to cook rice... not only bring joy and laughter but also help preserve and promote traditional local cultural values. These activities create opportunities for the community to bond, strengthen solidarity and mutual understanding. The traditional elephant procession festival at Dao Xa communal house is a precious cultural heritage, deeply reflecting the history and identity of the people of Dat To region.
