Gia Temple Festival

Dong Cao, Pho Yen district

Gia Temple Festival Gia Temple worships Phu Dong Thien Vuong and Manh Dien Quoc Vuong, an ancient temple in Dong Cao commune, Pho Yen district. Every year, Gia Temple has two festivals. The first period - the main festival, from the 4th to the 6th of January, has a procession of palanquins on which are "deo" (made of thinly sliced fresh bamboo, dyed red and yellow) symbolizing the iron whip of Saint Giong; People from all over the village and commune bring offerings to the temple to worship. In the past, during the festival there were swings, wrestling, drumming, and vi singing, but these have disappeared. The second period is only held on the 9th day of the 4th lunar month. On festival days, people offer sticky rice and chicken sacrifices at the temple. In particular, the offerings also include a tray of rice and three nong lentils - foods that, according to legend, Giong once ate and then stood up to fight the An enemy. Currently, this festival is held on the 30th day of the 4th lunar month every year.
