Festival of color grading, pestle pulling and fire dancing

Bac Quang and Quang Binh, Tan Trinh, Ha Giang

Level Sac Festival Time: November, December or January Among the festivals in Ha Giang, the Dao people's Cap Sac ceremony has a special meaning, considered a coming-of-age ritual for men. This is not only a religious ritual but also marks a man's maturity in the community. According to Dao people's beliefs, if a man has not gone through the Cap Sac ceremony, no matter how old he is, he is still not recognized as a real adult. They do not have a sound name, have not been granted religious status and cannot undertake important jobs in the village. On the contrary, those who have completed this ritual, even though young, are still considered adults, with enough rights to participate in religious rituals and take on important roles in the community. The Grant Sac ceremony not only carries spiritual value but is also a unique cultural feature, contributing to preserving the traditional identity of the Dao people in Ha Giang. This is one of the festivals in Ha Giang that attracts the attention of many tourists who want to learn about the unique customs and traditions here. The pestle pulling festival and the Traditional Fire Dancing Festival of the Pa Then ethnic people in Tan Trinh commune will be held on the same day Time: October 16 of the lunar calendar The pestle pulling festival is one of the unique, pristine and mysterious festivals of the Pa Then ethnic group in Ha Giang province. After harvesting the summer rice crop, Pa Then ethnic people, Tan Bac commune, Quang Binh district, organize a pestle pulling festival on the 16th day of the 10th lunar month. Participating in the pestle pulling festival, Pa Then boys wear new costumes, wearing lame-legged pants, decorated with two scarves crossed over their chest and using white belts. Pa Then girls stand out with bright red outfits including scarves, shirts, belts, and skirts. Tourists attending the pestle-pulling festival were surprised when the pestle held by the master, rotating and chanting mantras, made it impossible for many young people to pull the pestle down. The teacher who presides over the pestle pulling festival has an important role, being someone who is good at martial arts and knows how to recite mantras. The festival pestle is made of a piece of wood 2-3m long. Two healthy Pa Then young men hold baseballs in opposite positions. The presiding teacher rotated the pestle while reciting the incantation. Then, as if by magic, the pestle rotated on its own and lifted off the ground. Even though the two young men tried to pull, they could not pull the pestle down. Dozens of young people in the village tried to pull the pestle down but could not pull it down. Only when someone puts their hand on the upper or lower end of the pestle will the pestle touch the ground and the pestle pulling ceremony ends. The upper end of the pestle corresponds to the positive pole (meaning heaven), the lower end of the pestle  corresponds to the negative pole (meaning earth). Two young men holding pestles represent two different extremes (Pa Then people call it two buffaloes that never let go). Balanced yin and yang speaks to the Pa Then people's desire for harmony, balance, and a better life. The pestle pulling ceremony is often held along with the fire dancing festival.  Traditional Fire Dancing Festival of the Pa Then ethnic group in Tan Trinh commune. The Fire Jumping Ceremony is not only a spiritual expression, demonstrating human strength in life, but also the Pa Then people's desire to control nature to survive and develop. Within the framework of the Festival, visitors will directly experience many exciting traditional cultural and sports activities such as: Brocade weaving competition, pounding banh giay, and folk games such as stick pushing, crossbow shooting, stilt walking...
