Thiềng Liềng is a small, pristine, and rustic islet, located about 7km from Thạnh An commune center and accessible only by waterway. Its untouched, peaceful scenery, characteristic of the Cần Giờ mangrove ecosystem, combined with its simple, genuine, and hospitable locals, makes Thiềng Liềng a favorite trekking destination for nature-loving adventurers and photographers.
Mr. Tuấn Duy, a regular visitor to the islet, shared that Thiềng Liềng is beautiful in every season and offers stunning photo opportunities everywhere you look. However, two seasons particularly attract photographers: the salt harvest season and the pink grass season.

The salt fields and pink grass in Thiềng Liềng create a peaceful landscape that captivates visitors.
The salt-making tradition in Thiềng Liềng originated from salt farmers who pioneered and settled the land. Over 40 years ago, while searching for a place to "anchor," they discovered a deserted strip of land, settled there, and named the hamlet Thiềng Liềng. For generations, these salty grains have been the livelihood of the people on this remote and isolated islet.
Thiềng Liềng is currently one of the few remaining areas that preserve traditional salt-making methods, utilizing tools like rollers, wooden waterwheels for scooping water, and hand-cranked equipment. The salt-making season here typically begins with the dry season winds (around the 10th lunar month) and lasts until April of the following year.
Visiting Thiềng Liềng during the salt harvest, you won't just witness the traditional salt-making process of the salt farmers; you'll also have the chance to immerse yourself in a rare, tranquil scene, with clear blue skies and white clouds above, and endless white salt fields stretching out below, resembling tropical snow.

It's now November, the first weeks of this year's salt season. Across the salt fields, scattered salt farmers are busy clearing the ground, preparing their rollers and waterwheels, and awaiting the arrival of the dry season winds.
Before the dry season winds, comes the pink grass season. The entire Thiềng Liềng islet has only one unique oval-shaped road, 4 km long, winding around salt pans, canals, and mangrove forests. Along both sides of this road, vibrant pink grass fields bloom, dazzling under the sunlight, at dawn, in the night dew, and during late sunsets.

The pink grass in Thiềng Liềng belongs to the same species as the pink grass hills in Da Lat and Gia Lai, but due to its proximity to the sea, it grows stronger and taller than the grass in the Central Highlands, with exceptionally beautiful colors.
Along with the clear blue sky, these pink grass fields create a stunning landscape that compels visitors to stop, linger, and remember forever.

Ms. Mười, who owns a small homestay on the island, shared that visitors not only eagerly admire and take photos with the pink grass during its season but also appreciate how her homestay incorporates pink grass into its decor to beautify the space. This simple woman, starting this year's pink grass season, has learned to arrange the pink grass beautifully, accentuating it with tiny white or subtly purple wild flowers.
Ms. Mười's homestay is one of 16 services participating in the community tourism project on Thiềng Liềng islet — the first genuine community tourism product of Ho Chi Minh City. All food and beverages offered on the tour are handmade, cooked, and prepared by the local residents themselves, using traditional methods and ingredients readily available from their gardens. These include dishes like sâm sâm jelly dessert, bánh lọt pandan noodles, aloe vera juice, and local seafood such as red-spotted mudskipper and oysters.

Tourism services on the island are coordinated by the Thiềng Liềng Agricultural, Tourism, and Trade Cooperative (HTX). Ms. Nguyễn Thị Bạch Tuyết, Director of the Cooperative, stated: "Initially, many households were hesitant or unsure how to provide services. However, after a short period, thanks to thorough training and mutual support, the 16 participating households gradually became accustomed to tourism and developed many exciting activities. Each month, the households involved in community tourism on the islet gather to frankly discuss achievements and limitations, offering suggestions to collaboratively develop the model." Community tourism has helped Thiềng Liềng attract over 2,000 visitors in just a few months, generating revenue of over 400 million VND.

Visitors delighted by the super romantic pink grass scenery on the island.
In late autumn, Thiềng Liềng islet is a dreamy spectacle, adorned with the pink hues of the grass, the yellow of Hoàng Yến shower tree blossoms, and the green of nipa palm leaves. Along the islet's most beautiful sunset route, near Vietnam's closest-to-shore lighthouse, and beside the salt pans preparing for harvest, you will find peace arriving with every crisp, clear breeze…
