TPO - The Sa Mu Dau tree that has been living for more than 2,000 years in the core area of Pu Mat National Park (Nghe An) has a height of more than 70 m and a trunk diameter of 5.5 m. The tree is recognized as a Vietnamese heritage tree and this is considered the largest Samu Dau tree in Vietnam today.
Pu Mat National Park is a special-use forest, covering an area of 94,804 hectares, spread over three districts of Tuong Duong, Con Cuong and Anh Son of Nghe An province. In the Thai ethnic language, Pu Mat means high slopes. Pu Mat National Park was identified as the core area of the western Nghe An biosphere reserve recognized by UNESCO in 2007.
This place was once known as the "fairyland" of Nghe An. Not only does it attract tourists with its beautiful natural scenery, it also has majestic waterfalls and biodiversity with thousands of species of plants and animals.
In Pu Mat National Park, there is an ancient "Sa mu Dau" tree that is more than 2,000 years old. The tree was discovered by a group of experts investigating biodiversity in 1998. In October 2010, this Samu Dau tree was recognized by the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Nature and Environment as a Vietnamese Heritage Tree.
The scientific name is Cunninghamia konishii Hayata, belongs to the Cupressaceae family. Thai ethnic people in Con Cuong district (Nghe An) call this tree the May Pec tree. Samu trees are mainly distributed in primeval forests along the Vietnam - Laos border, a mixed area between broadleaf and coniferous trees, at an altitude of over 1,000 m above sea level, and is where slope from 12 degrees to 40 degrees.
